Most typists used the lower case L as the one digit.

Being of a certain age, I set type using the lead pieces and racks (we called 'em scrabble bars). The 'L' lower case serif font WAS the number '1.'

My Dad was a newspaper man. Three finger typing whirling to the crescendo "SLAM!" of the carriage return.

That's a beaut! Before I read your words I saw name on the typewriter and silently said: "Yeah! Right!" And your comment: "...the idea that this machine is silent, is more of a hope than a promise." Love it.
